: Luggage space
PikaTwo 02-10-2004, 05:54 AM The Automobile mag article states, "There is plenty of storage -- in the glove box, in the sills, behind the driver's seat, in a bin between the seats, and in the seats themselves." It would appear that the rear deck only covers the stowed convertible roof.
So -- where's the trunk? The GM official photos have one shot of the car with the rear deck open but no detail of the interior of the space.
Has anyone who's seen the production car at an auto show fill us in? Any photos of the interior of the rear deck area?
liebowa 02-10-2004, 10:45 AM As the owner of a 2000 Toyota MR2 Spyder, I am not expecting that the Solstice will have any real "trunk" other than what you mentioned.
In the Spyder, there's a bit of storage behind the seats in two bins - but not much at all. You can squeeze in a duffel bag and maybe a baseball mitt, or two - but that's about it.

Well, hopefully with this being a front engine and not mid engine like the MR2, there should be a fair ammount of trunk space. My cousin's Miata has a decent sized trunk.
I'm expecting that the top will rest beneath the deck, right between the seat backs and where the trunk lifts up. Like most rag tops, it should fold down nice and neat into a vertical column leaving the rest of the trunk space uneffected. This is just speculation of course and I would love to see real pictures of the production version with the top up, but like others have stated, GM probably doesn't have all of the details worked out yet about the top.
Oh well, time will tell.
Trunk? I don't need no stinking trunk! The only thing I am going to haul is...ass! :bouncy:

Hehe thats what i am talking about
PikaTwo 02-10-2004, 03:59 PM Oh, c'mon, Liebowa, you're starting to sound like the wags on Miata.net! :) I've used my '00 Spyder as my daily driver for nearly four years and I work out of my car. I also use it for weekend trips with the wife, and I regularly autocross it. I even take it to Home Depot for water-softener salt runs and to the grocery store, albeit sans passenger in those cases, usually. There's a good bit more storage space there than one could imagine -- it just takes some judicious packing and space-efficient "stuff." Just ask any of the hardy couples who regularly trek to Deal's Gap twice a year for the Dragon runs.
I'm not convinced that the Solstice will have any more stowage space than my Spyder -- why wouldn't Automobile Mag make mention of a "trunk" if there is one?
Looking at the pictures of the "naked" structure of the Solstice, I'd say that any spare space left over after the folding top is stowed under the rear deck, will be minimal at best, and it would have to be jammed in behind the roof, where the deck cover is hinged. That rules out a formal "trunk" that one could actually put "luggage" in.
Still, Pontiac plans to sell at least 20,000 of them. I wonder if those are overly optimistic forecasts for a car with "no trunk"?
BTW, Chip, you stole my slogan -- I've been saying that since I bought the Spyder in '00: "I didn't buy the car to haul stuff -- I bought it to haul ass!" ;)
So, has anyone actually seen one with the rear deck open -- besides that one picture that GM released (which doesn't show the "insides")?
ambient 02-10-2004, 05:03 PM Anyone on this forum going to the Toronto autoshow this week? GET A DAMN PICTURE OF THE "TRUNK" Im trying to find out if the Solsitce is coming to the Calgary or Edmonton autoshow next month and ill take as many pics as the gm guys will let me. I'm trying to get media passes from one of my close friends, that way Ill have more access then most would. And anyone that does take pictures take as high resolution as you can. For jobs like this Ill take min 3meg pics. then downsize for what ever we need.
liebowa 02-10-2004, 05:05 PM Oh, c'mon, Liebowa, you're starting to sound like the wags on Miata.net! :)
Ha! I wasn't complaining, per se, I was just moaning that I can't fit my damned golf clubs in the thing! That's about as much luggage as I'm ever gonna need to carry!
Other than that minor issue, I LOVE the car. But, I'm thinking I may need to pass it along to my wife once the Solstice hits the streets.
We'll see.....
JoePerches 02-10-2004, 05:27 PM and 1 set of golf clubs in a lightweight carry bag fit in a Boxster.
So, if the rear deck width permits, the Solstice should be able to put
a golf bag in the trunk. Time will tell.
If the clay model for the top is correct, the space in the rear will
be very limited. I doubt it'll have more than 5 or 6 cubic feet of space.
So your golf shoes may not fit at the same time as your clubs.
Gator8 02-11-2004, 11:17 AM Anyone on this forum going to the Toronto autoshow this week? GET A DAMN PICTURE OF THE "TRUNK".
I'll be sure to do that and post it here.
Gator8 02-15-2004, 07:02 PM I'll be sure to do that and post it here.
They had the Solstice tucked away in a corner of the GM exhibit. No one could get within 50 feet of the car.
Stephen M 02-15-2004, 08:26 PM I'm convinced that GM is still working on the design of the top and trunk storage. I don't think we'll know any details or even see any pics of the top & trunk interior for a month or two, maybe even longer.

miatasportscar 02-16-2004, 09:57 AM Hasn't anyone thought about a trunk rack? Having sold over 100 or so Miatas, I can conclude that many of my customers have fitted luggage racks and toured the country without worry about space. As for golf clubs, you can also buy a golf club bag holder (removable) for small sports cars...finally, the guy that made the remark about the "wags" on miata.net....not very nice of you, I'm one of those guys....
If Pontiac builds the Solstice to be HALF of what a Miata is, they'll have something...
miatanut 02-16-2004, 05:18 PM I would suggest that there only needs to be enough storage space for about two overnight luggage bags sufficient for a weekend getaway.
With regards to the ideas for luggage racks and some "need" for golfclub storage . . . decide what type of car you truely want. If you want all this cargo room buy a hatchback or sedan. But if you want the Solstice to be a true sports car then keep it small, tight, light weight, and focused.
This is what I love about the miata, its a very focused little sports car. There is a certain purity to it. (granted some may argue the point, what with A/C, power windows, and some trunk space, etc.)
I worry that the Solstice may be diluted and lose its focus. I hope not. I'm really rooting for the car. This is the first GM product (including the Corvette) that has actually gotten me excited about the company.
I ask the spokesperson if they could open the door, truck or hood and they said that they don't open
mmegyesi 02-18-2004, 08:35 PM I was at the Chicago Auto Show this past weekend. I asked about rear storage and was informed that the 'trunk' should be able to hold an overnight bag and perhaps a walking bag of golf clubs. The person also said he was not allowed to open the trunk or hood at all.
dav8or 02-23-2004, 10:22 PM I bet with the way the rear deck opens that they are thinking folding hard top.
Mracer 02-24-2004, 06:37 AM Dav8or, unlikely, remember this is a vehicle that's gonna' be very price sensitive! :eyebrow: It'd be too expensive for a folding hardtop, I think they want to conform to the KISS principle. :D

OK then how will you put down the (manual) top while sitting in the car with the deck lid opening the way it does?
butek 02-26-2004, 04:26 PM I agree with Mracer, for price - and weight - it won't be a hardtop. And it'll be manual. It won't be as easy to handle as, say, the Miata's top (it's hard to get easier than the Miata's top).
I personally think they haven't given the top much thought. This thing is designed as a basic roadster. Roadster purists don't really care much about the top - they're often afterthoughts (look at how many of the earlier roadsters' tops leaked badly right from the factory). It wouldn't surprise me if this one is less than friendly. That won't stop me from buying one, though.
