Well I was just intouch with with GMCanada and as of January 28, 2004 They have no plans to launch the Solstice in Canada. Mind you this is still early for GM to really know what they are going to do here.
Sure hope that the Solstice is not like the newer Toyota MR2 that we can not get in Canada!
Just thought I would put this post out so anyone in Canada that would buy a Solsitice better start emailing GMCanada and let them know that we are ready and willing to order our Solsitces too!!

This is a concern I had when GM announced a build of only 20 thousand Cars. In 93 when the Camaro/Firebird was restyled, we had a hard time getting them here! Nothing ever official, but none the less, they were very hard to get. What's in our favor (I hope) is that Mazda will be introducing it's new NC Miata roadster about the same time as the Solstice. If GM is really serious about capturing this market, they'll meet the challenge head to head.

This can't be right????

First the GTO is unavailable up here now the Solstice????? This makes no sense?!!

What the F&^% is GM trying to do? Are they planning on exiting the marketplace in Canada? Pretty soon they will only be selling pontiac minivans up here.

I emailed GM Canada and will do so OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN until I get an answer.

C'mon guys we need to start a petition or something!!

DAMMIT I WANT MY CAR! freaking GM just sell me a car! No wonder they lose customers to imports, I can't even buy a car from GM if I wanted to!!!!

Any one able to set up page for an online petition of some sorts? We have untill oct/nov 2005 to make sure GMCanada stands up and takes notice! I am not going to be screwed out of getting this car!

GM don't make me buy another import!

Ambient,

Start a thread on here "Petition to see Solstice in Canada" -- Ask people to put down an email address where they can be contacted at and we can submit that list to Pontiac.

If it gets big enough, I'll bet they will take notice!

Out of curiosity, does anyone know the difference between US and Canadian regulations when it comes to emissions, safety, fuel economy, lighting, etc? I'm wondering how much (if any) re-engineering would have to be done to the Solstice to get it approved for use in Canada. My impression has always been that the regulations are VERY similar, maybe a small change in side marker lighting or something. It's not like the steering wheel has to be on the other side or anything.

My point is the more we know about what would be required to sell the car in Canada, the better case we can make to the powers that be about bringing it there. I can't imagine there's any big stumbling blocks; after all, the kappa platform is supposed to be the basis for a number of different cars, and GM would have to be foolish not to plan ahead and make the platform compliant with regulations in North America, Europe, and Asia. It may be that there's NO changes needed, and GM is just witholding it because they don't think they'll be much demand for it in Canada. If that's the case, it's in everyone's best interest to prove them wrong.

BTW, I'm from the states, so this won't effect me personally, but I figure the more people who have a chance to buy a Solstice, the better. More owners = better aftermarket support, more active user community, more knowledgable dealers (maybe), etc.

Guys; I know that this is not a popular decision, but if we are only talking about 20K units in the whole of N. America, adding Canada would really dilute the numbers available per dealership. One has to assume that the dealers (selling the car) will have to send their techs to be checked out on the new car. I can't see GM footing that bill if each dealer only gets a couple. How many Pontiac dealerships are there in Canada? I am not trying to start anything here, just trying to figure out GM's reasoning. How many US Pontiac dealerships are there for that matter?

Stephen, 3 things jump out at me, 2 of them relatively inexpensive, 1 a major hurdle. All cars sold in Canada must have daytime running lights (DRL's), a simple module is all that's required for this safety feature, minimal cost. 2nd. speedo's to be marked in KPH: No cost. Now the next one is the biggie: 5 mph bumpers. For example, when any of our club members import a Miata into Canada from the US, the bumper reinforcements have to be swapped out for the 5 mph Canadian requirements. Now depending on how a car is structurally built, there might have to major reinforcement of the front/rear chassis to absorb the enery better than the weaker US bumper standard. Having said all that, I can't believe that right from the get-go GM wouldn't have taken the inevitable thinking that the car would be coming to Cananda! (even if it's later :( )

I talked to a large Chevy dealer in Burnaby BC Canada about 2 weeks ago and he also owns the pontiac dealership in town.

Since he owns both he said that they were getting the car in next year ( mid 2005) and that he was very excited about it.

I hope i am right and u are wrong...
